Porter Robinson and Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs sounds like an obviously complementary pairing—so much so that it is surprising this is the first time the two have linked. Though, the wait proves to be well worth it, as “Unfold” arrives just hours before Robinson’s feverishly awaited sophomore LP, Nurture.
Following a steady stream of singles leading up to the album’s release including “Musician,” “Look at the Sky,” and “Mirror,” the final precursory offering from the project is now upon us. Euphoric, emotive, and bright, the track swells into stirring percussive peaks with heavily filtered, powerful vocal work driving this electronic masterwork to a very poignant space.
Despite being the final single to land ahead of Nurture‘s full release, “Unfold” particularly feels like a microcosm of what to expect on the rest of the album, seemingly reflecting the most concentrated parts of the album’s overall complexion. The record comes from a very personal place for Robinson, amid struggles with depression, the impact of COVID-19, and the largely incalculable pressure of Worlds‘ sweeping critical acclaim and the fear that lightning may not strike the same spot twice. “Unfold” feels as though it packs a lot of that emotion into one single song, with TEED’s stylistic sensibilities elevating the best of Porter’s sonic qualities.
